|Environmental and energy concerns such as global warming and decreasing oil reserves are major problems facing our world in the 21st century. There is an increasing need for more energy-efficient and non-polluting devices such as fuel cells and solar cells. Development of these devices will allow us to both use existing finite energy sources (e.g. natural gas) more effectively and to exploit essentially infinite sources of energy (e.g. solar energy, energy harvesting). The Green Energy Materials Laboratory works on the processing on environmentally-friendly ceramic materials and ceramic materials for energy applications. Our work includes processing of lead-free piezoelectric ceramics and single crystals, and sintering of electrolyte meterials for solid oxide fuel cells. Our particular interest is in how changing the processing conditions (e.g. sintering time, temperature and atmosphere) affects sintering and grain growth behaviour, and how this in turn affects the electrical properties of ceramics.
